An Essay on Dussehra in English is provided as follows
In this world created by Almighty God, good always prevails over evil. Whenever evil rises, it is crushed by God’s action. In this way, God assures us that no matter how powerful the forces of evil are, good people will always be victorious over them in the long run.
Dussehra, also known as Vijaydashmi, is a festival celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil. On this day, Lord Rama is said to have killed Ravana – the demon king of Lanka. Ravana had abducted Lord Rama’s wife and kept her captive for many years. He was a powerful person and possessed many heads.
Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of the Ashvina month of the Hindu calendar. It is celebrated differently in different parts of India with much fanfare and enthusiasm. In north India, the effigies of Ravana consisting of his ten heads are burnt publicly in parks and grounds at events called Ramleela. Effigies of Ravana’s brothers Meghnad and Kumbhakarna are also burnt. A number of rituals like “Shami puja,” “Aparajita puja,” and “Seema Avalanghan” are performed. Fireworks are accompanied by them.
Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil in another way. It marks the culmination of Durga Puja, which commemorates goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to safeguard righteousness. In eastern parts of India, such as Bengal, Odisha and parts of Bihar, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water.
In South India, the festival is mostly observed in Mysore, Karnataka. It commemorates the day that Chamundeshwari, another manifestation of Goddess Durga, slew the demon Mahishasur. The entire city is gorgeously decorated and illuminated with colourful lights, and elephant parades and pulling processions of the goddess Chamundeshwari are also seen around the city.
On the eve of the auspicious day of Dussehra, fairs are organised by Hindu communities alongside the Ramleelas. The entire Ramayan is played by actors on the stage for several days in continuity. The Ramleela ends on Diwali, the day when Lord Rama returned to his city Ayodhya.
During Dussehra, enthusiasm and excitement can be seen all around. The Ramleela parks are full of people who come to pay their respects to Lord Rama and Goddess Durga and do some shopping. Children enjoy the fair where they get a host of entertainment activities. The aged people also enjoy the drama played by actors depicting the story of lord Rama, where they get to know some valuable lessons of life. Thus, The eve of Dussehra is a day for the celebration of all people regardless of their age.
The festival of Dussehra has always held a special place in Hindu Religion. The story and teachings of Lord Rama are told in almost every Hindu household. However, since the incursion of the internet, the culture of Ramleela and the celebrations associated with them is declining. It is thus the duty of every Indian to preserve the culture and heritage of this auspicious and important day.
