The recruitment of candidates takes place in three steps. The first step consists of application. Interested candidates are required to regularly check the official website of the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC). The commission releases notifications regarding recruitment quite often.

The second step is a written examination. Each job post has its own syllabus and entrance exam format. Candidates are required to check the syllabus and exam format before preparing for that job. A written examination is conducted for each job post or group. The exam is usually pen and paper-based. After the successful conduction of the exam, the HSSC releases the final answer keys and scorecards before releasing the result. The qualified candidates then proceed to the next step.

The final step is document verification. This step involves the verification of the documents of candidates. This step takes place because of the requirement of minimum qualification for every job post. This is thus a necessary step.
