4) Kabuliwala by Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore published Kabuliwala, a short story in Bengali, in 1892. The subject of the tale is a Pashtun fruit vendor from Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, who comes to Calcutta once a year to sell dry fruits. He develops a certain affection for Mini, a five-year-old child from an upper-middle-class aristocratic family when he is living in India because she reminds him of his own daughter back in Afghanistan. Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most celebrated authors of India. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 1913. He is popularly known as the Bard of Bengal and is the writer of India’s National Anthem “Jana Gana Mana”.

5) Eidgah by Munshi Premchand

He wrote about one and a half dozen novels like Sewasadan, Premashram, Rangbhoomi, Nirmala, Gaban, Karmabhoomi, Godan etc. and more than three hundred stories like Kafan, Pus Ki Raat, Panch Parmeshwar, Bade Ghar Ki Beti, Budhi Kaki, Do Bailon Ki Katha etc. Premchand’s literature written between 1906 and 1936 is a sociocultural document. In this, there is a clear depiction of the social effects of social reform movements, freedom struggles and progressive movements of that era. Idealistic realism is the main feature of his literature. In the field of Hindi stories and novels, the period from 1918 to 1936 is called the ‘Premchand era’.

Eidgah is a story about Hamid, an orphan, who lives with his grandmother. Hamid recently lost both of his parents, but his grandma informs him that his mother went to Allah to procure magnificent gifts for him and that his father left to earn money. This gives Hamid optimism, and despite Amina’s concerns about their poverty and her grandson’s safety, Hamid is a content and upbeat youngster.
