The Indian National Flag, also known as the Indian Tri-colour, consists of three colours, namely Saffron, White and Green spread out horizontally in equal proportions in that order. There is also the Ashok Chakra present in the centre of the National Flag. The Saffron colour symbolizes the strength, courage and sacrifice of the nation, and the White colour symbolizes Peace and tranquillity and the need to maintain peace in the country. Green colour symbolizes fertility and prosperity. The Ashoka Chakra (also known as the Dhamma Chakra) represents constant movement, progress and the rule of law.
Our National Flag is our pride. It symbolizes the unity of all Indians no matter which language they speak or which religion they belong to or which state they reside in. It symbolizes one person, irrespective of caste, creed, gender, race, ethnicity, religion etc. It also celebrates unity in the diversity of India. The Flag is also the true representative of Mother India.
Our national Flag also tries to balance out the various religious groups present in the country. Saffron colour is a Hindu religious colour that is often used in Hindu religious ceremonies. The Green colour is the religious colour of the Muslims. As is clearly visible, all three colours are in equal proportions representing the secular character of India and that the country does not differentiate between its people based on religion.
The Indian National flag was adopted in July of 1947 when our country was not yet Independent and was ruled by the Britishers. It was presented in the Parliament by India’s First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Our National Flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter and a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi.
The National Flag has its own story of evolution. From very early on, the Indian National Flag was a tri-colour. The first tri-colour was the Vandemataram Flag which was first designed in 1906 after the Partition of Bengal. The Partition was done on religious lines, i.e. the province of Bengal was divided into two parts, one being mostly Hindu and the other being mostly Muslim. Thus the Vandemataram Flag of 1906 symbolised the unity of the two people and had religious signs of both Hindus and Muslims.
