A Population Problem in India Essay is as follows

With a population of over 1.3 billion people, India is the most populous country on Earth. For many years, India’s population problem has been a major source of concern and poses a major challenge to its social, economic, as well as environmental development. It has also impacted the growth of our country in a negative way. Even though India is the fifth largest economy in the world, it ranks well below other countries in all other social indicators.

One of the main reasons for the population problem in India is poverty. There exists a nexus between poverty and overpopulation. Impoverished families find it convenient to have more kids to increase social security and cumulative income. Most Indian states with high populations are poor as well. With the vicious cycle of poverty comes a lack of education, making poor people unaware of contraceptive methods and the negative effects of having too many kids. Cultural reasons are also responsible for the meteoric rise in India’s population. Indian parents usually have a desire for at least one male child since it is believed that a male child guarantees social security in their old age. This has resulted in a couple giving birth to kids until a male child is born.

Overpopulation poses a serious problem for India. Food, water and energy are in high demand due to the world’s rapidly growing population. This can result in food shortages and price increases in some parts of the country, especially in rural areas. India has witnessed such a scenario in the past when the shortage of food led to people, including the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, skipping dinner for a day.

India’s population problem also increases the pressure on its social services. Public health is one sector that has suffered negligence from the governments for decades. Indian public hospitals lack the basic infrastructure and amenities to serve such a large population resulting in high demand for private medical practitioners and, as a result, rising cost of basic medicare. Public education also suffers in such a situation. Government-run schools in most states are in extremely bad condition, lacking proper infrastructure and even adequate classrooms. This has resulted in education becoming privatised and a decline in the quality of education in government schools.

The population problem in India can only be resolved by proper planning. Family planning programmes, rewards for small families, as well as educational campaigns to raise consciousness regarding the need for population control, are among them. The Indian government has initiated some programs to control the population but has had mixed results. Some states have seen their population rate decline but others have had little change in the birth rate.

To bring the desired change, the government and various NGOs need to work hand in hand to spread awareness about the issue and how overpopulation will ultimately harm us. This needs a prolonged effort as the population will not come overnight under control.
